Il grande naturalista francese dell’Ottocento Jean Henry Fabre fece un esperimento utilizzando i bruchi di processionaria. Questi bruchi si nutrono di aghi di pino e usano muoversi in fila indiana, ognuno attaccato con la testa alla coda di quello che lo precede. Fabre prese un grosso vaso in terracotta, dove al centro era piantato un alberello di pino, e vi dispose sul bordo i bruchi di processionaria in modo tale che il primo bruco fosse collegato con l’ultimo, a formare un cerchio completo.
