Negli anni Cinquanta, lo scrittore e storico inglese Cyril Northcote Parkinson pubblicò l’importante legge che porta il suo nome: «Il lavoro tende a espandersi fino a occupare tutto il tempo a disposizione per completarlo». Parkinson osservò che l’uomo tende a utilizzare tutto il tempo che ha a disposizione per portare a compimento una data attività. Riportava l’esempio di un’anziana nobildonna che, per scrivere una lettera alla nipote, impiegava un giorno intero: un’ora per cercare il foglio, un’ora per cercare l’indirizzo, un’ora per comporre il testo, un’ora per andare a imbucare la lettera e così via.
